The VICE with a frame HISTORY! This hard working vice has made many frames for many years before Darrell Llewellyn McCulloch put metal into its jaws. This trusty vice belonged to Eric Hendren who built "Hoffy" frames till his retirement. Many tons of material has been in and out and still today I am proud to use this vice in the construction of frames.

The bench. It is here at the frame building bench that I spend most of my days standing.I do not do any mechanical work here. There is files on the back board, jewellers files in a block and hanging up. Numerous special tools and things that are used each day are close to hand.

I believe good tooling is a must have. It must be cared and stored correctly. Good tooling is expensive but it is a requisite in the pursuit of a high standard of workmanship

The frame jig. This purpose built jig comes from Italy and is used to form the frame up into shape. It holds the tubes in correct alignment and geometry. Then the frame is tack joined and checked on the alignment plate for fastidious accuracy. It is heavy and expensive.

This is a "A" grade hand scraped surface plate. This is a very flat and accurate surface plate cast from a special cast iron. It provides a true and believable datum surface that all frame alignments are checked from. Yes it is heavy!

Skilled and highly trained technicians control all frame alignment procedures to extremely high tolerances. They also supply a good breakfast. Isabelle is setting up the next tube mitre in the mill and Harriet is preparing the alignment table for the next frame.

The lathe is used daily. I also make much of my own tooling in house. If I need to make or modify I have the tooling. I use the lathe constantly to machine fork crowns, dropout plugs, tubing and numerous other tasks. I can not understand how some frame builders can get by without a lathe!
